Guest blog by Ayrshire Golf Scotland

Ayrshire on the South West Coast of Scotland is one of the premier golf destinations in the world. Boasting Three Open Championship venues and has over 45 courses to choose from. Whether it is a Championship links, a hidden gem, a parkland delight or a unique golf experience on the Isle of Arran, we believe it’s Our Golf, Your Way!

The region is of course the ‘Birthplace of The Open’ where it all began in October 17th 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club. From the history of the game at Prestwick and Royal Troon to the modern day classics such as Dundonald Links, the golf on offer is second to none and with ease of access from both Glasgow Airport (35 minutes) and Edinburgh Airport (1hour 15 minutes).

When planning a Scotland golf trip and visiting the region, a visit to The Whisky Experience, Robert Burns Cottage and Culzean Castle are a must and would be a great addition to any Golf itinerary.

Outside of the big three, Prestwick, Turnberry and Royal Troon, Ayrshire Golf Scotland Recommends the following courses as a must on your next golf trip:

  • Western Gailes, one of Scotland’s hidden gems positioned along a stretch of Coastline with natural dunes looking out to Ailsa Craig and The Isle of Arran.
  • Troon Links, three of Scotland’s best municipal courses. Jack Nicklaus once shot 81 in an Open Qualifying round at The Troon Darley Course, so a true test of golf can be found here.
  • Dundonald Links, one of Ayrshire’s new courses opening in 2001. A challenging links course that could have been built 200 years ago. Host to this year Scottish Ladies Open on the Ladies European Tour.
